What to Look For in March 2019

March 22, 2019 by Don Lahey

Laderas De Cabama Rioja 2013In March, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series is proud to offer members four special wines from iconic producers from two hemispheres.  This month’s odyssey begins with the charming, easy to like 2013 Laderas de Cabama Rioja, an elegant, fragrant Rioja from Valenciso that brings out the feminine side of Tempranillo at the same time that it offers bold flavors and impeccable balance.  Luis Valentin’s magic touch with Tempranillo shines through in the 2013 Laderas de Cabama.  Produced from 100% Tempranillo, this wine delights the nose with savory scents of woodland berries, pomegranate, dried leaves, and exotic spices.  In the mouth, the wine displays a smooth round feel that carries the wine’s spicy cherry and blackberry flavors to a delightfully fresh conclusion.  In true Rioja Alta fashion the 2013 Laderas de Cabama unfolds beautifully in the glass, revealing layers of complex flavors and a freshness rarely seen in other Riojas.  Once again, Valenciso has released a wine that strikes a perfect balance between fruit and structure that is ideal for drinking now!

Chateau La Gabarre Bordeaux Blanc 2017Our next feature this month is the 2017 Château La Gabarre Bordeaux Blanc, a traditional blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon that comes across as the quintessential white Bordeaux.  The 2017 vintage yielded exceptional quality white Bordeaux wines and the finest Château La Gabarre Bordeaux Blanc to date, thanks to the Gabards’ expertise with Bordeaux varietals and a late spring frost in 2017 that drastically reduced yields in 2017 but increased quality.  The wine’s bright glint in the glass makes a fine first impression that is quickly followed by a savory bouquet redolent with the scents of freshly cut melons, citrus, herbs, and orchard fruits.  The wine’s sensual appeal continues in the mouth, where deep drafts of melon, citrus and minerals combine to embrace the palate.  In the mouth one also tastes and feels the roundness and superb texture that Semillon imparts to the wine.  Fresh, layered, and artfully balanced the 2017 Château La Gabarre Bordeaux Blanc offers plenty of flavors before finishing with verve and vigor.

Nugan Estate Scruffys Shiraz 2015This month’s next feature is the 2015 Nugan’s Scruffy’s Single Vineyard Shiraz, a wine that is anything but scruffy or even slightly hard around the edges.  Named for Nugan’s Shiraz Vineyard Manager, the 2015 Scruffy’s Single Vineyard Shiraz shines from the moment it is poured.  This a deep purple potion that offers spicy blackberry, cherry, and currant aromas infused with hints of violet flowers and Asian spices that woo the taster.  The wine’s beautiful olfactory carries through on the palate, where it offers a mélange of succulent dark berry and fruit flavors, dried flowers, and delicate spice tones.  Silky soft in the mouth but never flabby this Shiraz exhibits just the right amount of gentle ripe tannins to seal the deal.  The 2015 Scruffy’s Single Vineyard Shiraz over delivers in every respect, offering the class and breed one normally associates with the finer Syrah based wines from France’s Rhône Valley.  Enjoy!

Domaine Talmard Macon Chardonnay 2016Rounding out this month’s Premier Series selections is the sunny, straw-colored 2016 Domaine Talmard Macon-Chardonnay from the birthplace of Chardonnay in the heart of Burgundy’s Maconnais.  From its ebullient straw colored robe emanate orchard scents of ripening apple and pear, coupled with soft floral tones reminiscent of acacia and mimosa.  Interlaced among the wine’s floral aromas is a beguiling limestone minerality, the very calling card of the finest Maconnais Chardonnays, thanks to the region’s unique terroir.  And to everyone’s delight the 2016 Domaine Talmard Macon-Chardonnay carries its delightful olfactory onto the palate.  Imbued with a wonderful smooth texture and bearing a host of savory orchard fruit flavors, minerals, and lemon zest this bone dry, medium-bodied Macon-Chardonnay leaves the mouth invigorated and refreshed.  .

Mauritson Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 2015The International Wine of the Month Club’s Collector Series is proud to deliver three truly exceptional wines this month from three of the planet’s most prized appellations. Leading this month’s Collector Series is the 2015 Mauritson Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, a wine that has garnered a cult following among consumers and critics alike (93 Points Wine Spectator).  The 2015 Mauritson Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel is not only delicious and easy to drink it offers a degree of complexity rarely seen in Zinfandel.  A superb blend of 95% Zinfandel and 5% Petite Sirah Mauritson’s 2015 Dry Creek Zinfandel positively sings from the glass, offering a beguiling bouquet of blackberry, black cherry, and exotic spices.  Redolent but not overpowering, this medium to full-bodied, sleekly structured Zinfandel offers up an enviable array of flavors to match its seductive bouquet: blackberry and blueberry fruit infused with vanilla, baking spices, and bramble unfold seamlessly in the mouth.  One can hardly resist this bold flavored handsomely made Zinfandel, its innate charm, and explosive finish.

Domaine Du Grand Tinel Chateauneuf Du Pape Blanc 2017Next up is the exceptional and rare 2017 Domaine du Grand Tinel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc.  Grand Tinel has been on a roll in recent vintages with its Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc and their 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is perhaps the finest to date.  From this light straw-colored wine, which holds more than a glimmer of the shimmering Provencal sun, emerges the seductive scents of tropical fruits: pineapple, guava, and lime infused with subtle hints of wild herbs and minerals.  On the palate, the wine truly blossoms, revealing a lush creamy texture backed by a bright citrus vivacity that makes it hard to resist and the ideal companion to bring to table.  Unlike so many white wines whose flavor profiles appear wrapped up mainly in the bouquet, it is the center of this intriguing Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc that makes it special.  This classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is ideal for drinking now and over the next several years.

Consortium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016Completing this month’s Collector Series is the 2016 Consortium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.  Born in a perfect vintage in America’s premier appellation for Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Consortium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is already an absolute delight to drink.  Bold but not brazen, this superbly crafted Cabernet exudes exceptional flavor, charm and precision.  From the moment it reaches the glass, the 2016 Consortium begins to work its magic by offering beguiling scents of blackberry, Morello cherry, plum, and hints of bay leaf, all of which come wrapped in a well-integrated patina of oak.  The 2016 Consortium Cabernet doubles the pleasure in the mouth as the wine’s beautiful olfactory wells up on the palate, providing rich black and red fruit flavors infused with deft touches of bay leaf, dark chocolate, and tobacco.  Fine ripe tannins support the wine’s complex flavors and provide impeccable balance and mouthfeel.  Enjoy!

What’s Coming in February 2019

February 22, 2019 by Don Lahey

Plaisir BottleIn February, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series is excited to offer our members four outstanding wines from around the world, beginning with the 2017 Château Sainte Eulalie Plaisir d’Eulalie Minervois. Ripe, round, and beautifully textured, the 2017 Plaisir d’Eulalie highlights this renowned Languedoc estate’s inimitable terroir, old vines, and expert winemaking in yet another exceptional vintage. Savory scents of black cherry and plum, intertwined with hints of violet, Provençal herbs, and black pepper greet the nose and continue to develop and impress for hours. Juicy red and black fruit flavors mingle with hints of garrigue and violets to fill the mouth and grace the palate, while soft, ripe tannins frame this seductive red and carry the wine’s pleasing surfeit of flavors to a fulfilling finish. The 2017 Château Eulalie Plaisir d’Eulalie is a wine for those who appreciate a pure unadulterated red wine that displays both beautiful fruit flavors and an authentic taste of its place of origin. For those seeking such a wine, they need look no further than this superb country wine from France’s oldest wine producing region.

Rustenberg Chard 2017 BottleOur next Premier Series feature is the bold and complex 2017 Rustenberg Stellenbosch Chardonnay, a wine that bears more than a passing resemblance to the traditional Napa Valley Chardonnays of the 1970s – the very wines that challenged France’s superiority with Chardonnay and established California as the New World’s premier wine producer. The 2017 Rustenberg Stellenbosch Chardonnay offers enticing aromas of apple, apricot, coconut, orange peel, and toasty oak. In the mouth, Rustenberg’s Chardonnay is equally rich and balanced. It fills the mouth with complex fruit flavors tempered with hints of marzipan and fresh acidity, all wrapped in creamy oak from a 12 month hiatus in barrel. Add the further complexity imparted by wild yeast fermentation in barrel and Rustenberg’s 2017 Stellenbosch Chardonnay presents itself as world class wine and a real Chardonnay lover’s dream.

Barreyre E BottleNext among this month’s exceptional features is the 2015 Château Barreyre Bordeaux Supérieur. With ideal growing conditions throughout the 2015 vintage, and traditionally very low vineyard yields, Château Barreyre has produced the château’s most prodigious wine to date. The 2015 Château Barreyre weighs in at a whopping 15% alcohol and is packed with color and mouth-filling flavors. It wears a deep purple robe and offers a seductive set of aromatics. The savory scents of blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, and hints of cedar and fresh forest floor come to fore. In the mouth, the wine’s haunting aromatics reappear to grace the palate. Carried on a bed of smooth-textured tannins, one hardly notices the power this wine packs until the wine has slipped ever so easily down the throat. Bold and beautiful but never brash, the 2015 Château Barreyre is a joy to drink now, though it will undoubtedly continue to improve in bottle for at least several more years.

Steve Bird Winery Gisborne Pinot Gris BottleCompleting this month’s Premier Series offerings is the 2016 Steve Bird Gisborne Pinot Gris, a wine that makes a bold statement right out of the bottle with Pinot Gris’s natural tint – a bright luminescent golden yellow color. From the color, one might almost think an unctuous wine awaits a beckoning sweet tooth, but not so. Fresh, clean aromas reminiscent of pear and white peach imbued with a hint of exotic spice greet the nose. In the mouth, one immediately realizes the magic in this wine is not in the form of sweetness. Steve Bird’s single vineyard Pinot Gris offers a wealth of subtle fruit flavors, a gentle flinty minerality, and an impeccable texture and mouthfeel. Moreover, touches of spice and refreshing acidity lead to an immensely satisfying finish that made tasting panel members beg for more.

Domaine Chamfort Vacqueyras 2016 BottleThe International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is thrilled to offer three special collectable wines in February, beginning with the rare 2016 Domaine Chamfort Vacqueyras from the Southern Rhône Valley. As a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and 15% Syrah, the 2016 Domaine Chamfort Vacqueyras is a powerful yet polished wine of great character from old vines, many of which are in excess of 50 years of age. Deeply colored, full-bodied and packed with flavor, the 2016 Domaine Chamfort Vacqueyras displays a heady bouquet of dark fruits, anise, garrigue (the amplifying herbal scents and savors of the Provençal landscape), pepper and spice. Moreover, the wonderful 2016 vintage in the southern Rhône has endowed the 2016 Chamfort Vacqueyras with additional elegance. Rich in fruit and long on flavor, this youthful but complex Vacqueyras is already chock full of hedonistic pleasure, yet further reward awaits those with the patience to afford this wine an additional year or more in bottle. An outstanding effort from Domaine Chamfort, Vasco Perdigao’s 2016 Vacqueyras deserves a place on every Rhône lover’s table as well as a cool resting spot in the cellar.

Emile Beyer Grand Cru Eichberg Riesling D’alsace BottleOur next February Collectors Series offering is Emile Beyer’s 2016 Grand Cru Eichberg Alsace Riesling, a highly allocated, truly exceptional, delightfully dry Riesling that is meant to be enjoyed at table with a splendid meal. Emile Beyer’s 2016 Grand Cru Eichberg Riesling offers a beautiful aroma and a wealth of complex flavors, beginning with an enthralling potpourri of spring flowers, honeysuckle, orchard fruits, hauntingly delectable spice tones, and an engaging minerality, all bolstered by bright acidity. Balanced acidity with the mouthwatering freshness of lemon zest adds crispness and lift to the wine’s long, explosive finish. With a glass of Emile Beyer’s Eichberg Grand Cru Riesling, put aside all preconceived notions of the noble Riesling varietal and discover the grape’s true beauty, without the residual sugar.

Chappellet Mountain Cuvee 2016 BottleRounding out this month’s Collectors Series is the 2016 Chappellet Mountain Cuvée from master Napa Valley winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus. The 2016 Chappellet Mountain Cuvée is a delicious crowd-pleasing Cabernet blend (51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 13% Malbec, 9% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc). Dark purple in color, packed with rich fruit, and endowed with ripe tannins that beautifully frame the wine’s cornucopia of complex flavors, the 2016 Chappellet Mountain Cuvée raises the bar for Napa Meritage offerings. The wine’s enticing bouquet reminiscent of classified Bordeaux gives way to a wealth of black currant fruit, cedar, dark chocolate and a pleasant touch of earthiness that many other California Cabernet based wines seem to lack. Bold but not brash, the wine unfolds in the glass as it breathes, revealing plenty of appealing fruit and finesse along with ample structure to allow it to evolve further for several more years. More than just a good solid Cabernet, the 2016 Chappellet Mountain Cuvée is truly an outstanding effort from Phillip Corallo-Titus and the folks at Chappellet. Enjoy!

What’s Hot and What’s Not in Wine in 2019?

January 25, 2019 by Don Lahey

Red White Wine In GlassOne trend that has already taken the wine world by storm and shows no sign of abating is America’s love affair with rosé, dry rosé in particular.  This trend is hardly new, but its continuing resurgence defies the pundits.  In short, dry rosé has become more than a trend and a summertime drink.  It’s no longer the stepchild of red and white wine but a bona fide wine category that now demands equal status with white and red wine.

As for what is the best unknown wine out there just waiting to be discovered, it is likely the one in my glass, which could be almost anything from an aromatic, hauntingly delicious Kerner from Italy’s Alto Adige to a Super Tuscan from Bolgheri or Maremma along Italy’s Tyrrhenian Coast, or one of Argentina’s super premium Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon blends that sells for a fraction of California’s overpriced Cabernet Sauvignons.

Napa Valley Cabernets, in particular, are overvaluing themselves. With the exception of a few dozen iconic Cabernet and Cabernet blends, it appears the bubble is bursting on California Cabernets selling for $50.00, $100.00, or more. Attempts to sell such wines “quietly” at substantially discounted prices have increased exponentially over the past year despite a recent string of exceptional vintages and a plethora of excellent wines. What are undervalued, especially in the premium category, are South Africa and South America’s top reds.

In the $12.00-$20.00 category, Spain’s red and white wines are frequently undervalued and remain veritable bargains, too. White Spanish wines from top producers made from Albariño, Godello or Verdejo varietals can be purchased for less than $20.00 a bottle. And who can forget the many outstanding blends from Spain’s Montsant or the thoroughly enjoyable Tempranillo-based wines of Castilla Y León?

The world of wine has always suffered from a split personality.  Wine drinkers are presently in love with rosé and at the same time enamored of bold reds and in search of another lover.  Merlot, after a makeover, appears to be on the rebound, too.  Who knows what comes next from fickle palates?

Salud!
Don

What’s Coming in January 2019

January 23, 2019 by Don Lahey

Urlari Pervale Igt Toscana Rosso 2012 BottleIn January, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series will feature four world-class wines from four renowned wine estates, beginning with the 2012 Urlari Pervale Toscana Rosso, a Super Tuscan comprised of 25% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot, and 7% Alicante Bouschet, whose deep rich color and sensual aroma prepare the palate for an impending feast. Draughts of dark cherry, woodland berries and wild violets waft from the glass to caress the nose. In the mouth, the wine’s deep berry flavors expand on the palate, where they meld with hints of fennel and cedar. Firm tannins bolster the wine’s bold flavors but slowly recede as the wine breathes. Make no mistake, Urlari’s 2012 Pervale is a big wine with no wimp, but it opens beautifully – much like the Tuscan landscape that unfolds slowly around each and every bend.

Chappellet Double C Ranch Chardonnay 2014 Bottle CoaThe next compelling feature in our Premier Series is the 2014 Chappellet Double C Ranch Napa Chardonnay. Chappellet is one of Napa Valley’s iconic properties. The Double C Ranch Chardonnay is classic old-school Napa Chardonnay that brings everything a Chardonnay lover could ask for in a wine. It delights the nose with a bouquet of savory scents born of freshly picked apples and pears infused with delectable hints of toffee, vanilla, and spice. Juicy and silky smooth in the mouth, the 2014 Chappellet Double C Ranch Napa Chardonnay delivers pristine fruit flavors and a cornucopia of spice, toasted vanilla and more, which made our most discriminating tasting panel members beg for a second and third glass. In the mouth, the wine caresses the palate with a harmonious mélange of flavors before exiting with charm, grace, and a lovely lingering finish. Taste Chappellet’s 2014 Double C Ranch Chardonnay and enjoy a glimpse of this property’s half century romance with the land, a tryst that has yielded many of Napa’s finest wines.

Milbrandt Vineyards Merlot 2012 BottleNext among this month’s exceptional quartet is the 2012 Milbrandt The Estates Merlot, a special blend of 94% Merlot, 5% Malbec, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is no innocuous commercially-made Merlot, so you won’t find any wimp in this wine. Weighing in at 15.5% alcohol and endowed with plenty of enticing aromas, firm tannins, and a flavor profile that boasts ripe blackberry, Bing cherries, cacao, and more, the 2012 Milbrandt The Estates Merlot provides a big mouthful of wine. It opens quickly, offers a substantial mid-palate, and finishes with real pop. “Bordeaux on steroids” may be the best analogy.

Aia Vecchia Vermentino BottleCompleting this month’s delicious Premier Series offerings is Aia Vecchia’s 2017 Vermentino, a sophisticated blend of 95% Vermentino and 5% Viognier that sports a bright straw color and amplifying aromatics. Lively aromas of freshly cut grass mingled with faint floral tones and a touch of sea spray from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea provide a mouthwatering welcome. In the mouth, this Vermentino makes an even greater appeal to the senses by marrying its delightful aromatics to a round creamy texture that simply offers the best of all worlds. On the palate, freshness, flavor and genuine tactile appeal all come together in Aia Vecchia’s 2017 Vermentino. Round yet refreshing, Aia Vecchia’s 2017 slides easily down the throat to finish with a flourish.

Domaine Raspail Ay Gigondas BottleThe International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is thrilled to offer three unique collectable wines in January, beginning with the superb 2015 Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas. Although consistently one of the greatest producers from the highly lauded Gigondas appellation, Raspail Ay’s 2015 Gigondas appears to be the finest Gigondas ever produced at the domain. It earned multiple 90+ scores, including 96 Points from Decanter and 93 Points from Wine Advocate. The 2015 Raspail Ay Gigondas is not only highly aromatic, richly fruity, and beautifully textured; it possesses a solid core and a deep down richness that guarantees longevity as well as many years of exceptional drinking pleasure. The wine’s brilliant purple robe strikes the eye just as the wine’s amplifying bouquet of black fruits, kirsch, and garrigue tempered with hints of rose petals and violets caresses the nose. In the mouth, the 2015 Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas continues to work its magic where one truly gets the sense of how exceptional the 2015 Raspail-Ay Gigondas truly is. A well of deliciously textured fruit, Provençal herbs, cracked pepper and exotic spices are all encased in a splendid framework of perfectly ripe tannins to delight the mouth and enliven the senses. This Raspail-Ay Gigondas is bold and buff for sure, but in no way ponderous or out of shape. Authoritative and yet beautifully balanced, the 2015 Raspail-Ay Gigondas is the real deal.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay BottleOur next January Collectors Series offering is the 2017 Hamilton Russell Hemel-en-Aarde Chardonnay, which made Wine Spectator’s 2018 Top 100 list of wines, and with a little more time in the bottle, the initial 93 Points from Wine Spectator now appears a bit stingy. The 2017 Hamilton Russell Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Chardonnay is world-class all the way. This Chardonnay is a vibrant, complex wine that embodies the best in Old and New World Chardonnay. Full-bodied but well delineated, this terroir-driven Chardonnay offers a superb array of apple, quince, and stone fruit flavors, all of which are beautifully integrated into the wine’s crisp acidity and delightfully complex mineral tones. Touches of honeysuckle and verbena along with a faint hint of spice add further to the keen interest and gustatory pleasure wrapped up in the 2017 Hamilton Russell Chardonnay. Fresh, yet succulent, this wine finishes with a bang. What else can we say except ENJOY!

Jacques Girardin Les Peuillets Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru 2015 BottleCompleting this month’s Collectors Series is the magical 2015 Jacques Girardin Savigny-les-Beaune Premier Cru Les Peuillets from what may prove to be the greatest Burgundy vintage ever. Although Jacques Girardin consistently fashions authentic, elegant red Burgundies, Girardin’s 2015 Savigny-les-Beaune Premier Cru Les Peuillets stands in a class by itself. It is not only the finest wine we have ever tasted from this erudite producer, it is downright delicious. Elegant, silky smooth, yet juicy and vibrant, Jacques Girardin’s 2015 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Peuillets positively sings from the glass. An enticing bouquet of raspberry and blackcurrant, red plums and rose petals seduces the nose. Medium-bodied but rich in color and flavor, Jacques Girardin’s 2015 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Peuillets is both subtly complex and immediately gratifying. This is the richest of Girardin’s fine red Burgundies with a memorable array of savory Pinot Noir flavors and a long sensual finish. Enjoy!

What to Look for in December

December 14, 2018 by Don Lahey

Lazaret VentouxIn December, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series will feature a rare exceptional red wine from Provence, the 2016 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Ventoux. This Provençal classic entices with its heady aroma; the seductive scents of red berries, mostly in the form of raspberries and redcurrants, immediately greet the nose. Add touches of wild Mediterranean herbs and garrigue, the scented brush of Provence, and an intoxicating concoction is in store to delight the nose. Silky smooth in the mouth and bursting with fresh fruit and pleasant racy spice tones, it is hard to resist this seductive, medium-bodied red wine that goes down ever so easily and accompanies with aplomb a wide range of holiday fare.

La Giustiniana Gavi Di Gavi Lugarara Vtg 17Our accompanying white Premier Series feature is the 2017 La Giustiniana Lugarara Gavi del Commune di Gavi DOCG, an exceptional Gavi from Stefano Massone. This single vineyard Gavi embodies all of the Cortese grape’s finest attributes: charm, elegance, finesse, and laser-like precision. The 2017 La Giustiniana Lugarara Gavi offers a beautiful straw-colored robe and a delicate perfume resplendent with the scents of pure freshly squeezed grapes, acacia and citrus blossoms as well as plenty of juicy acidity in the form of lemon zest. Add a soft but refreshing mid palate and impeccable texture and balance that complements the wine’s racy finish and we bet you will find this wine truly hard to resist.

Dominio BasconcillosNext in this month’s exceptional quartet is the much coveted 2016 Dominio Basconcillos Seis Meses Ribera del Duero, a wine that received 94 Points from Decanter and seriously raises the bar for all Ribera del Duero. This certified organic offering emanates from selected lots of grapes grown on a mixture of gravel and clay soils, which provide superb drainage and impart complexity as well as a diversity of flavors to an already impeccably balanced, fruit and spice packed wine. The 2016 Basconcillos Seis Meses Ribera del Duero reflects the estate’s pre-eminence in crafting traditional Ribera del Duero, as it offers a deep red color, superb concentration, and plenty of polish to complement its ample ripe tannins. Heady aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, sassafras, sage and violet flowers delight the nose. Happily, this youthful Ribera del Duero follows through in the mouth, too, offering plenty of smooth robust fruit and spice flavors backed by just the right amount of healthy tannins to assure a long illustrious life and many years of pleasurable drinking.

Houchart BlancCompleting this month’s Premier Series offerings is the delicious and eminently drinkable 2017 Domaine Houchart Côtes de Provence Blanc. In this rare white wine made from traditional Provençal grapes, one can almost taste the Provençal sun, feel the cool breeze wafting from the Mediterranean Sea, and smell the scented fragrance of Provence’s magical landscape. Light, fresh, yet full of flavor and pinpoint precision, the 2017 Domaine Houchart Côtes de Provence Blanc offers an intoxicating aroma of citrus, mango and white peach. In the mouth, the wine’s crisp orange peel and spice flavors appear on a sea of delicate acidity, making the wine’s delightful finish both round and refreshing. Domaine Houchart’s delicious 2017 Côtes de Provence Blanc brought a host of smiles to our tasting panel and made us all beg for more. No smoke and mirrors, oak, or butter tones here, just one fresh, unique white wine that embodies the best of Provence.

Avignonesi Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano 2013The International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is thrilled to offer three exceptional and unique wines in December from Italy and France, beginning with the much heralded 2013 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, an aromatic, elegant wine of bold flavor and impeccable balance. The recipient of multiple 90+ ratings including 91+ Points from Wine Advocate, the 2013 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano reveals its class and noble upbringing from the moment it exits the bottle. Dressed in a regal robe of purple with deep ruby highlights, this graceful yet flavorful Tuscan red leads with an enticing aroma redolent of black cherry, forest woodlands, violets, and spice along with a pleasing hint of mineral born of Tuscan earth – all of which intimate the ultimate complexity of the aristocratic 2013 Avignonesi Vino Nobile. On the palate, the 2013 Avignonesi Vino Nobile expands to reveal a mélange of complex flavors that well up from a vibrant core replete with ripe dusty tannins, which will inevitably hold this Vino Nobile in perfect condition for a decade or more. With aeration, hints of dark chocolate and fine Florentine leather also emerge to meld with the wine’s polished fruit and spice tones.

Maison Yves Chaley Cuvee De La Tour St Denis Les Larets Pinot Gris Dit Beurot 2016Our next December Collectors Series offering is one of the rarest of French wines, the 2016 Domaine Chaley & Fille Les Larets Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Pinot Gris dit Beurot. Only in select areas of Burgundy where Pinot Beurot is indigenous, such as in the tiny village of Curtil-Vergy, is the grape allowed to be grown and its wine sold as Burgundy. A white mutation of Pinot Noir, Chaley’s Les Larets Pinot Beurot from Curtil-Vergy sports a dark pinkish skin, which adds a rich, slightly golden color to the 2016 Domaine Chaley & Fille Les Larets Pinot Beurot. The wine’s aroma is attractive and its flavor quietly seductive. Unlike Hautes-Côtes de Nuits wines made from Chardonnay, oak doesn’t play a significant role in this wine, so that Les Larets’ pure fruit flavors, gentle spice, and refreshing minerality all come front and center in one harmonious package from the first sip until the last.

Maison Yves Chaley Cuvee De La Tour St Denis Les Rousselots Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016 EditedCompleting this month’s Collectors Series is the 2016 Domaine Chaley & Fille Les Rousselots Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. The Hautes-Côtes de Nuits produces some very fine red Burgundies, especially in splendid vintages such as 2016 when the weather shines favorably upon the undulating rows of Pinot Noir vines that cover the hills, but rarely does a Hautes-Côtes de Nuits match the quality of the 2016 Domaine Chaley & Fille Les Rousselots. Chaley’s 2016 Les Rousselots could easily be mistaken for a village wine from nearby Vosne-Romanée, the most hallowed ground in Burgundy, where dirt determines destiny. Chaley’s 2016 Les Rousselots wears a deep red robe that aptly foreshadows its strength and structure. This is no wimpy translucent Burgundian Pinot Noir, but a traditional age-worthy red Burgundy that reveals its intoxicating bouquet of cherries, woodland berries and exotic spices slowly, almost surreptitiously. Similarly, the wine’s rich deep fruit flavors, floral tones, and complex blend of bergamot, black tea, and vanilla emerge at a snail’s pace, but slow and steady wins the race. This is a wine built for the long haul. Enjoy!

What to Look for in October

October 26, 2018 by Don Lahey

Tour De Gilet BottleIn October, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series will feature an exceptional red Bordeaux wine from the outstanding 2016 vintage, Château Tour de Gilet, and three other superb selections from around the world. A traditional blend of primarily Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the magnificent 2016 vintage, the 2016 Château Tour de Gilet truly shines. Bolder and richer in flavor than one might expect from a Petit Château, the 2016 Château Tour de Gilet offers up an inviting bouquet of blackcurrant, cranberry and forest floor. In the mouth, a delightful mélange of berry flavors (blackberry and currant), dark cherry and damsel plum make a delightful appearance on a wave of silky tannins. Nicely balanced and endowed with traditional Bordeaux character and style, one would be hard pressed to find a better, more affordable Petit Château than the 2016 Château Tour de Gilet.

Cambridge Carneros Ccr Chardonnay 2014 BottlesOur next Premier Series feature is the 2014 Cambridge Cellars CCR Carneros Chardonnay. Since its inception, Cambridge Cellars has consistently over-delivered on quality, and this month’s feature is no exception. The 2014 Cambridge Cellars CCR Carneros Chardonnay offers a tantalizing bouquet of spring flowers and buttered brioche along with just the right touches of vanilla and caramelized oak. The wine’s aromatics flow through on the palate, too, offering a complex mélange of fruit, lemon curd, freshly baked croissants and toasted almonds. “Hedonism in a glass,” remarked several members of the tasting panel. Add a nice citrus twist, superb texture, and a gracefully long finish to this wine’s delightful repertoire and it is difficult to imagine a better Chardonnay from California or France for less than $50.00 than the 2014 Cambridge Cellars CCR Carneros Chardonnay.

Monasterioreserva BottleNext in this month’s quartet is the 2008 Monasterio de las Viñas Reserva, a 10 year old Reserva from Spain. A blend of Garnacha (50%), Tempranillo (25%) and Cariñena (25%), the perfectly mature 2008 Monasterio de las Viñas Reserva offers layers of smooth, mouthwatering flavors. Lightly scented with the aromas of blackberry, plum, violet, finely tanned leather and unsmoked tobacco, this wine draws you in almost surreptitiously. In the mouth, the wine is smooth and expansive, offering well-integrated fruit, leather, cedar, and cigar box flavors born of a 12 month hiatus in oak. Reminiscent of mature Rioja Reserva, the 2008 Monasterio de las Viñas Reserva offers plenty of flavors before finishing with mouthwatering acidity from fine-grained tannins.

Estampa Fina Res Sb 17 BottleCompleting this month’s Premier Series offerings is the delicious 2017 Estampa Fina Reserva Sauvignon Blanc, a wine every bit as compelling as the estate’s Fina Reserva red wines. The 2017 Estampa Fina Reserva Sauvignon Blanc is an artful blend of predominantly Sauvignon Blanc with small amounts of Chardonnay and Viognier. The addition of Chardonnay adds texture and mouth feel, while Viognier augments the wine’s already attractive aroma: citrus scents mingle with herbal tones and freshly cut grass, offering a delightful perfume that goes far beyond what one expects from Sauvignon Blanc alone. In the mouth, the wine’s generous tropical fruit flavors and fresh acidity come to fore, providing both counterpoint and refreshment.

Chapel Hill Mv Cab 15 BottleThe International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is proud to offer three exceptional wines in October from opposite ends of the world, beginning with the stunning 2015 Chapel Hill McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon from a winery that consistently garners 90+ points for its wines and continues to over-deliver with each successive vintage. The deeply colored 2015 Chapel Hill McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon offers an impressive array of savory Cabernet aromas: a core of refined blackberry and cassis infused with hints of wild herbs and eucalyptus—not unlike many of Joe Heitz’s legendary Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons of yesteryear—seduces the nose and seeps deliciously into the marrow of this wine. Medium to full-bodied, the boldly flavored 2015 McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon possesses superb balance, polish, and texture, which allows it to drink beautifully now while remaining capable of further maturation and 10 or more years of pleasurable drinking.

Jos Chromy Est Chard 15 Frt BottleOur next October Collectors Series offering, the 2015 Josef Chromy Tasmania Chardonnay, is one of the finest Chardonnays made south of the equator. It is rare that any New World Chardonnay tastes like Puligny-Montrachet or can stand qualitatively with Puligny-Montrachet, one of France’s greatest white wines from Burgundy, but Josef Chromy’s 2015 Josef Chromy Tasmania Chardonnay does resemble Premier Cru white Burgundy and, yes, it does taste a lot like Puligny-Montrachet. The 2015 Josef Chromy offers up a brilliant robe, savory scents and flavors of stone fruits, citrus, crisp mountain apples, freshly baked bread, and hints of exotic spices refined by a light patina of vanilla from the finest of oak barrels. Yet the most endearing aspects of this wine may be its lithe and engaging flavors and superb texture, which come wrapped in one seamless and supremely elegant package. Like fine Puligny-Montrachet, the 2015 Josef Chromy Chardonnay relies on elegance and finesse more than power to charm its adherents. Josef Chromy’s 2015 Chardonnay is already quite exceptional now, but if past vintages and experience with Chromy’s Chardonnays are any indication, the 2015 Josef Chromy Chardonnay will continue to improve in bottle for at least several more years.

Paveil De Luze 2015 BottleCompleting this month’s Collectors Series is the 2015 Château Paveil de Luze Margaux from the outstanding 2015 Bordeaux vintage. This wine reflects the renovation and attention afforded this historic property by renowned wine consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt and the late Frédéric de Luze. The 2015 Château Paveil de Luze is not only a sleeper of the great 2015 Bordeaux vintage, it is potentially the finest wine produced at this property in more than half a century (91 Points – Wine Enthusiast). The 2015 Château Paveil de Luze is a deeply colored wine with impressive fruit, texture, and body. Ripe and generous, it displays plenty of blackberry and plum flavors infused with tobacco and Margaux’s pleasant distinctive earthiness. Backed by ripe, substantial tannins, the 2015 Château Paveil de Luze is a wine to lay down in classic Margaux fashion as such patience yields huge dividends. Enjoy!

What to look for in September

September 28, 2018 by Don Lahey

The Princess The Peasant Signal Ridge Vineyard Mendocino Pinot Noir 2016 BottleIn September, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series is proud to offer four exceptional wines from around the world. The first wine in this series is the 2016 The Princess & The Peasant Mendocino Pinot Noir from renowned winemaker Roger Scommegna. Scommegna’s 2016 Princess & The Peasant Pinot Noir from Signal Ridge Vineyard marries several of the finest Pinot Noir clones (Dijon 115, Wadenswil 2A, and Mariafeld 23) into a sophisticated, intense Burgundian style wine. Hauntingly aromatic with the savory scents of mountain berries, lavender and violets, the bouquet alone of this Pinot Noir is worth the price of admission. In the mouth, the wine’s bold aromatics explode on the palate, offering rich dark fruit flavors, floral notes, mineral and spice all carried on the silkiest of tannins. Balanced, beautiful and well-endowed, the 2016 Princess & The Peasant Signal Ridge Pinot Noir is made to please.

Boccadigabbia Falerio Pecorino 16 BottleOur next Premier Series feature is the 2016 Boccadigabbia Pecorino from Italy’s Marche. The product of the rare Pecorino grape, which is indigenous to Italy’s Marche, Boccadigabbia’s 2016 Pecorino cuts a splendid figure in the glass, with a bright sparkling color and pronounced aromatics. It is even more intriguing on the palate where it unleashes a multitude of flavors, backed by bright acidity and an elegant, delectable tang that sets it apart from white wines from more common grape varieties. In fact, nothing about Boccadigabbia or the Marche’s beloved Pecorino comes across as ordinary. Dry, crisp, and refreshing as an afternoon sea breeze, the 2016 Boccadigabbia Pecorino offers up savory citrus scents and flavors that mingle with fruit and floral tones as well as hints of caraway and the nearby sea. Energetic and fresh, this medium-bodied white wine drinks well now, yet promises several more years of delightful drinking.

Black Pearl Vineyards Oro 2015 BottleNext in this month’s quartet is the outstanding 2015 Black Pearl Oro from South Africa’s Western Cape. A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Shiraz, the 2015 Black Pearl Oro emanates from a pristine vineyard located in the most beautiful wine country on earth. Deep in color, concentrated in flavor and beautifully structured, Oro is indeed liquid gold. Proprietor Mary Lou Nash picks the grapes by hand for Oro, ferments them in an open tank, gently basket presses them, and then ages her precious gem in barrel for one year. Scents of blackberry and mulberry, subtle earth tones, and hints of aromatic herbs waft from the glass before seeping into the marrow of this brooding red to delight the palate. Although bold-flavored and well-structured, the 2015 Black Pearl Oro also exhibits plenty of charm, making it easy to drink and just as easy to forget that it contains 15% alcohol by volume. Pure, bold, and extremely focused, the 2015 Black Pearl Oro reflects the energy, disarming charm, and total commitment of Mary-Lou Nash, Black Pearl’s co-owner, winemaker, viticulturist and one woman marketing group.

Downes Family Vineyards Sanctuary Sauvignon Blanc 2016 BottleRounding out this month’s diverse offerings is the 2016 Downes Family Vineyards Sanctuary Peak Sauvignon Blanc, which is no ordinary Sauvignon Blanc. Similar to the finest white Bordeaux, it contains no less than seven different blocks of Sauvignon Blanc planted on soils rich in mineral quartz crystals, as well as 10% Semillon that is fermented with wild yeasts and aged three months in new French oak. The result is a brightly colored wine that shows tremendous complexity to complement its pungent fruit and herb flavors. Citrus and melon flavors make their appearance, too, along with a hint of capsicum. A fresh bit of acidity provides refreshment and adds to the wine’s long, lingering finish.

Domaine Pierre Usseglio Lirac 2015 BottleThe International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is proud to offer three superlative wines in September beginning with the 2015 Domaine Pierre Usseglio Lirac, a tour de force in winemaking from the ancient Lirac appellation across the Rhône River from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Deep and rich in aroma, color, and flavor, Pierre Usseglio’s 2015 Lirac offers up an enticing bouquet of ripe black cherries, kirsch, garrigue and fine-grained leather. In the mouth, the wine’s heady aromas coalesce on the palate in a seamless blend of fruit, earth, and spice that keeps on giving long after the wine has slipped down the throat. Balanced and fresh with ripe tannins, Pierre Usseglio’s 2015 Lirac offers everything most Châteauneuf-du-Papes have to offer and more.

Luca G Lot Tupungato Mendoza Chardonnay 2016 BottleOur next September Collectors Series offering, the 2016 Luca G Lot Tupengato Chardonnay, is a Chardonnay that could easily be mistaken for a top-notch Premier Cru white Burgundy from Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet. Grown in well-drained limestone rich soil at 4,900 feet in the isolated Gualtallary (hence the name G Lot) district of Mendoza’s Uco Valley, Luca’s G Lot Chardonnay possesses the purity, panache, and precision one craves in great Chardonnay, beginning with a bright straw color and an entrancing bouquet. Lemon cream, tropical fruits, spiced pear and a racy minerality tantalize the nose. In the mouth, white peach, pear, baking spices and deft hints of hazelnut emerge to delight the palate. The elegant, medium-bodied 2016 G Lot fills the mouth and enlivens the senses with a delightful mélange of succulent Chardonnay fruit as well as an intriguing cornucopia of mineral and spice flavors. Elegant, flavorful and endowed with impeccable balance, G Lot’s bright acidity and understated oak tones ideally frame the wine yet never dominate. Luca’s G Lot Chardonnay truly underscores Laura Catena’s commitment to quality and Argentina’s ability to fashion world-class white wine as well as red wine.

Chateauneuf Du Pape 2015 BottleCompleting this month’s Collectors Series is the critically acclaimed 2015 Pierre Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Garnering 92 points from Wine Advocate and 93 points from James Suckling, Pierre Usseglio’s 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape emanates from the outstanding 2015 vintage in the Southern Rhône Valley and offers everything one hopes to find in classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape: color, aroma, depth of flavor, power, warmth and rustic charm. One can also expect more than a bit of polish and freshness in this wine. Ripe raspberry and dark cherry fruit aromas entertain the nose, while deep berry flavors, crushed herbs, garrigue, and hints of spice and wood smoke fill the mouth and permeate the senses. Ripe, round tannins and a pleasant freshness carry the wine’s fruit and mineral elements to a long, pleasing conclusion.

Enjoy!
