What to Look For In February 2018

February 16, 2018 by Don Lahey

In February, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series offers four special wines. To begin this month’s wine adventure is the 2015 Château Ducasse Graves, the progeny of the exceptional and much heralded 2015 vintage in Bordeaux. The 2015 Château Ducasse Graves displays a deep purple robe and an enticing aroma of black fruits, cassis, unsmoked tobacco and supple earth tones that greet the nose and enliven the palate. In the mouth, this charming red Graves truly blossoms, revealing layers of satisfying flavors. Dry, yet rich on the palate, the 2015 Château Ducasse offers a wealth of flavors, blackberry and currant fruit, cedar, herbs and wood smoke to complement the wine’s ripe, firm tannins. The 2015 vintage in Bordeaux has endowed this wine with ample fruit and a healthy tannic structure along with exceptional texture, all of which bode well for both early consumption and long-term cellaring.

Our next Premier Series feature, the 2016 Cantina del Mandrolisai DOC Vermentino di Sardegna, is a wine blessed with a rich straw color, a beguiling floral bouquet of spring and summer flowers, and a gentle, sophisticated minerality. Cantina del Mandrolisai’s beautiful 2016 Vermentino engages the nose from the moment it is poured. The wine’s clean scented bouquet continues in the mouth, where pure ripe fruit flavors fill the mouth and the wine’s exceptional texture tantalizes the licentious palate, making subsequent sips nothing short of obligatory. To complement the wine’s sleek textured fruit, crisp acidity imbued with hints of citrus provides length and a long refreshing finish. The 2016 Cantina del Mandrolisai DOC Vermentino di Sardegna will certainly make members take note of the beautiful island of Sardinia and its charming Vermentino.

Next in this month’s quartet is the 2016 11 Piños Bobal Old Vines, a deep purple potion from Spain that welcomes the eye and delights the nose with seductive aromas of cherry, plum and spice. And in the mouth, the 2016 11 Piños Bobal Old Vines truly shows its hand, exhibiting bold, rich flavors. Cherry, plum, spice and hints of wood smoke grace the palate. This youthful Bobal offers plenty of concentration in a smooth, balanced frame made of soft tannins. Mouth-filling and persistent on the palate, the 11 Piños Bobal Old Vines marries the unique qualities of Bobal to the contemporary penchant for moderate oak ageing, making this wine very easy to drink.

Last but certainly not least in this month’s Premier Series is the mouthwatering 2016 Ottosoldi Gavi, a wine that embodies the essence of the Cortese varietal – supreme elegance and impeccable balance. From the wine’s pale yellow sun-splashed robe to its long, snappy finish, the 2016 Ottosoldi Gavi offers delightful drinking. Fragrant with floral scents and the aromas of pear and citrus, this Ottosoldi Gavi is sure to elicit a smile and delight the senses. Lacking extremes in weather during the 2016 growing season, the 2016 Ottosoldi Gavi maintains a healthy tension between fruit and fresh acidity, an attribute that preserves Gavi’s hauntingly delicate ethereal quality. Add subtle minerality and a long, racy finish and it becomes obvious why Ottosoldi’s Gavi has consistently been lauded by critics and consumers alike.

The International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is proud to offer three truly exceptional, highly allocated wines in February. Our first February feature is the outstanding 2010 Valenciso Rioja Reserva from the most impeccably run property in Rioja. The otherworldly 2010 Valenciso Rioja Reserva continues this bodega’s hot hand by turning in another terrific performance. Tim Atkins, Master of Wine, and Decanter magazine awarded the 2010 Valenciso Rioja Reserva 96 points. The 2010 Valenciso Reserva is adorned with a deep purple robe, explosive aromatics, finely polished fruit, and captivating spice tones. And as we have found with each and every vintage from this superbly run estate, the 2010 Valenciso Reserva embodies much of the confidence, personality, and charm of winemaker Luis Valentin. Produced from 100% Tempranillo, Valenciso’s 2010 Rioja Reserva offers savory scents of red and black fruits, ripe woodland berries, sandalwood, cinnamon, and deft touches of vanilla from oak barrel ageing. In the mouth, the wine unfolds slowly and persistently in true Rioja Alta fashion to reveal a wellspring of fruit, spice, and warm wood flavors. Moreover, layers of complex flavors continue to tantalize the palate and linger long after the wine slips down the throat. The 2010 Valenciso Reserva strikes the ideal balance between fruit and structure, characteristics that have consistently earned Valenciso international acclaim.

Our next February Collectors Series is an exceedingly impressive barrel fermented Chardonnay from a pioneering Walla Walla producer, the 2014 Woodward Canyon Washington State Chardonnay, a wine that positively sings from the glass. The show begins with the wine’s attractive hue and continues with tantalizing aromas of freshly picked apples and pears, brioche, and hazelnut. The bouquet on this wine alone sealed the deal for us. However, wait until this vibrant, complex Chardonnay has a chance to work its magic in the mouth. Superbly integrated vanilla tones complement the wine’s juicy fruit and vibrant acidity to enliven the palate. Burgundian in style, Woodward Canyon’s 2014 Washington State Chardonnay offers a delightful set of complex flavors in the form of orchard and stone fruit flavors, lightly buttered toast, and subtle hints of spice before exiting with a long racy flourish. The recipient of numerous 90+ ratings, including Editor’s Choice and 91 points from Wine Enthusiast as well as 91 points from Wine Advocate, the 2014 Woodward Canyon Chardonnay is indeed special and quite enjoyable now, but one need not be in a hurry as this rock solid Chardonnay has plenty of years of life ahead of it.

The 2013 Round Pond Estate Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon rounds out this month’s superb Collectors Series offerings. The recipient of 94 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, this wine truly reflects Round Pond’s highly prized terroir, the region’s signature Rutherford dust, and the inherent benevolence of the 2013 vintage in Napa Valley – certainly one of the finest vintages for Cabernet Sauvignon on record. Round Pond’s 2013 Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec) embodies the best of all worlds, both old and new as it melds the finest Napa Valley fruit to Bordeaux elegance and complexity. Hand-crafted entirely from the top 5% of Round Pond’s Rutherford estate, it exhibits a complex set of aromatics, layers of gorgeous fruit, polished tannins and exceptional minerality thanks to Rutherford’s magical dust. Rich cassis, plum and floral scents grace the nose and palate. In the mouth, one senses the wine’s richness and experiences the complex layers of fruit, exotic spices and minerals that make Round Pond’s Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon so appealing. This wine has been described as “intense, smooth, medium-bodied, rich, and supple.” Although seemly contradictory, Round Pond’s 2013 Rutherford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is all of these and more. Enjoy!

Rioja: Home to Spain’s Best Red Wine Bargains

February 9, 2018 by Don Lahey

Rioja has been dubbed “a land of history, light and color, vines and wheat, and above all, people for whom friendship is the greatest possible treasure” by the Rioja Minister of Tourism. Rioja is all of this and more, a land etched by history and endowed by a special wine that shares the region’s name. Moreover, Rioja wine is as warm, friendly, and distinctive as the people who inhabit this unique land halfway between Spain’s capital and the towering Pyrenees Mountains. Rioja also enjoys a reputation as the most approachable and recognized name in great Spanish wine and the home of Spain’s best red wine bargains.

Vineyards have always influenced the history and character of the people in the Rioja. Long before France became a bastion of fine wine, the Romans had settled in Iberia and pushed inland from the Mediterranean to the headwaters of the Ebro River and its tiny tributary, Rio Oja, from which Rioja derives its name. In Rioja, the Romans found ideal conditions for the cultivation of Spain’s most important indigenous grape varietals, Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, and Garnacha (Grenache), which today constitute modern red Rioja. Given its long history for continuously producing fine red wines, Rioja not surprisingly received Spain’s first Denominaciones de Origen (D.O.) in 1933.

It is Rioja’s unique blend of red grapes, coupled with an often lavish hiatus in small oak barrels, which yields warm, truly dry, yet richly fruity red wines of great finesse and perfume, many of which can appear nearly immortal in great vintages. Although a few names in Rioja carry hefty price tags, the vast majority of red Rioja comes from 132,000 acres and three distinct zones (Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta, and Rioja Baja). These wines sell for far less than wines of comparable quality from elsewhere, making red Rioja one of the planet’s greatest red wine bargains.

Red Rioja comes in four basic styles: Joven, Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. The amount of oak barrel aging, coupled with time in the bottle before release, determines the designation. These styles begin with Joven, which receives little or no time in oak barrels, and culminates with Gran Reserva, which matures in barrels for two or more years and cannot be sold before its fifth birthday.

The best bargains in Rioja are among the Joven, Crianza, and Reserva designations. Although many old Gran Reservas can be exceptional, others can appear dried out and lacking in fruit due to their extended stays in barrel. In America, Rioja Reservas reign supreme, having found the fine balance between freshness, complexity, and maturity with just the right patina of oak to please the American palate.

What to Look for in January

January 12, 2018 by Don Lahey

In January, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series is proud to offer members four special wines from Italy and France. To begin this month’s odyssey, we travel first to Italy where you will discover Sergio Gomba’s 2015 Querciola Barbera d’Alba, a wine that underscores Gomba’s hot hand with Barbera and highlights his ability to consistently fashion rich, velvety Barbera d’Alba that is both mouth-filling and easy to drink. The 2015 vintage in Piemonte yielded exceptional Barberas, wines that are both rich in fruit and firmly structured. Gomba’s 2015 Querciola Barbera d’Alba expresses the sensual side of Barbera. It offers up a savory aroma that reminds us of the finest traditional Barbera wines of yesteryear. Gomba fashions his Barbera d’Alba to be drunk young, yet with the ability to age beautifully in the bottle for five or six years. The wine’s deep ruby and purple color exudes savory scents of ripe Bing cherries, lavender, plum, violets, and woodland berries. In the mouth, the wine’s captivating aromas seep into the flavors of the wine and glide easily across the tongue and around the mouth in an offering of beautiful Barbera fruit along with deft touches of spice – all held together by ripe tannins.

Our next feature this month hails from France and a secluded mountain vineyard in the South of France – the 2016 Secret de L’Enfer Chardonnay. This Chardonnay puts many Mâcon and New World Chardonnays to shame. It relies upon beautifully ripe Chardonnay fruit grown in a mineral-rich terroir for its flavor rather than on copious amounts of toasted oak and a host of other “smoke and mirrors.” Apple, pear, and apricot scents mingled with the aroma of freshly baked bread waft from the glass. Fresh, energetic, and wonderfully varietal in flavor, the 2016 Secret de L’Enfer Chardonnay expands in the mouth, offering the savory flavors of orchard fruits along with a delightful minerality born of the vineyard’s exceptional terroir. Pinpoint precision and balanced acidity provide a moderately long finish, all of which add to the wine’s overall appeal. Uncomplicated, but not simple, the 2016 Secret de L’Enfer Chardonnay is a natural tasting Chardonnay that could easily be mistaken for a very fine white Burgundy: it exemplifies the varietal and provides plenty of drinking pleasure without the preponderance of oak.

This month’s next venture is the 2012 Château Argadens Bordeaux Supérieur, a wine wrapped in a beautiful ruby and garnet robe. The 2012 Château Argadens presents itself as the poster child for Right Bank Bordeaux. This delicious blend of 63% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc offers generous fruit, surprising complexity and supple balance, which have no doubt contributed to the consistently high marks this wine has earned in tastings and competitions. Enticing aromas of boysenberry, cassis (also known as blackcurrant), cedar and spice waft from the glass. At first, this wine appears light, lovely, and eminently drinkable in the mouth, but there is more to come so there is no need to rush this well-crafted Bordeaux as red and black berry fruit flavors backed by seductive earth tones and velvety tannins emerge with a bit of aeration.

Rounding out this month’s Premier Series is the vibrant 2016 Domaine de la Racauderie Gautier Vouvray Sec. When the sun shines in the Loire Valley and the weather cooperates from bud break to harvest, as it did in 2016, Vouvray produces some of France’s greatest white wines as well as a bevy of exceptional values. We found no better example of this quality and value in Chenin Blanc than the 2016 Domaine de la Racauderie Gautier Vouvray Sec. From Gautier’s 2016 Vouvray Sec a pale sun-kissed robe delights the eye, but what is even more striking is the wine’s hauntingly beautiful aroma, an ethereal combination of stone fruits, orchard fruits, dried honey, and a distinctive minerality born of Vouvray’s limestone-rich tufa soil. In the mouth, the wine’s bouquet is born again. Delicate layers of flavor bearing hints of pear and quince glide across the palate, while a sensual minerality provides additional texture. As the wine makes its exit down the thirsty throat, a bright, balanced acidity refreshes the palate. Enjoy!

The International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is proud to begin 2018 with three exceptional French and Italian wines from three of the planet’s finest appellations and producers. The 2014 Château Louvie Saint-Émilion Grand Cru makes a persuasive case for two of Bordeaux’s most prestigious grapes: Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Deep in color and rich in flavor, this juicy, velvety offering exhibits all of the attributes of the very best Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. The youthful, yet already compelling, 2014 Château Louvie combines opulence with palate-pleasing flavors. Beguiling berry, cassis, and woodland scents waft from the glass to make the mouth water. Not surprisingly, these savory scents reappear in the mouth, expand, and cling to the palate in the most delightful way, but what may be most impressive about Château Louvie’s Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is the wine’s velvety texture. It possesses a wonderful mouthfeel. Sensual, yet structured, this smooth, vinous, bold-flavored wine continues to evolve in the glass for hours. It’s hard to ask for more in a young Bordeaux Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. The 2014 Château Louvie offers both fine near term drinking and the potential to age gracefully for up to a decade.

Next up is the delightful 2015 Domaine Gilles Noblet Pouilly-Fuissé. The 2014 and 2015 vintages in Pouilly-Fuissé have been heralded as the finest back to back vintages in Burgundy’s Mâcon in a generation, and in the case of Gilles Noblet’s incomparable 2015 Pouilly-Fuissé La Collonge it is unquestionably the finest wine we have encountered from this award-winning estate, which Wine Spectator has previously featured on its Top 100 List. Noblet himself has stated: “The 2015 Mâcon wines are the finest I have produced in 37 years,” which is high praise from a consummate winemaker not given to brash statements or hyperbole. Given the vintage’s shy yield and Noblet’s strict selection and insistence on quality over quantity, the 2015 Domaine Gilles Noblet Pouilly-Fuissé offers greater concentration than usual, yet the same bright sun-kissed robe and amplifying aromatics that one has come to expect in Gilles Noblet’s Pouilly-Fuissé are front and center. In fact, the wine is even better than it was last year upon first release. The wine’s seductive aroma of acacia blossoms, mountain apples, melon, and soft mineral tones are coupled with a seductive mid-palate and luxurious texture. Ripe fleshy fruit, pinpoint minerality, and a delightfully racy finish balanced by just the right amount of acidity to match the fruit render the 2015 Domaine Gilles Noblet Pouilly-Fuissé a clear standout.

Completing this month’s Collectors Series is the 2012 Poggio Salvi Brunello di Montalcino. The first impression one receives of Poggio Salvi’s highly acclaimed 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is the wine’s intense, nearly opaque ruby red color. Yet, as eye-appealing as this wine appears, it offers much more than visual appeal. Scents of wild red berries, baking spices, lavender and new leather begin to waft from the glass soon after opening. Although initially reticent like all young Brunellos, the 2012 Poggio Salvi blossoms with aeration, slowly unfolding with each sip. Flavorful but elegant, black cherry, plum, and star anise flavors emerge on the palate, where they mingle with touches of nutmeg, balsamic notes, and fine grained tannins to attest to why Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most sought after wines and why Poggio Salvi reigns as one of the appellation’s finest practitioners. Enjoy!

What to Look For In November

November 10, 2017 by Don Lahey

In November, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series offers four more special wines from Spain and “lands down under.” The 2014 Bodega Diaz Bayo Ribera del Duero Crianza leads this month’s charge. Bold, beautiful, and full of mouth filling flavors, the 2014 Diaz Bayo Ribera del Duero Crianza emanates from 100% Tempranillo vines averaging over 50 years of age from two high altitude vineyards. This traditional Ribera del Duero exhibits rich aromatics as well as considerable flavor and structure. Cherry and mulberry fruit blended with spicy balsamic notes and traces of spice and new oak make a splendid aromatic introduction. Equally engaging and authoritative on the palate, the 2014 Diaz Bayo Crianza expands in the mouth, offering rich fruit, subtle spice tones, and sufficient tannin to carry it into the next decade and beyond.

Our next feature is the delicious 2014 Mont Marçal Reserva Brut, a rare vintage cava from one of Spain’s finest producers. Mont Marçal promises elegance and a light airy appeal from the moment it is poured and its tiny pinpoint bubbles stream exuberantly to the top of the glass. Commemorative, celebratory, spontaneous, and versatile, the 2014 Mont-Marçal Reserva Brut resonates with supreme elegance, flavor and texture. It offers ethereal scents of spring flowers and golden pears infused with a touch of fennel and a gentle minerality. Light, clean, and clearly delineated in the mouth, its fruit flavors glide easily across the tongue. In a world in which authenticity is hard to come by, the 2014 Mont-Marçal Brut Reserva makes a delightfully strong case for cava – Spain’s esteemed sparkling wine.

This month’s next venture is the 2010 Formby & Adams Leading Horse Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, a tribute to the family’s leaders who have propelled Formby & Adams and the Brothers in Arms winery to the forefront of boutique Australian producers of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The 2010 Leading Horse Cabernet Sauvignon displays an enticing bouquet of berries, mint, and hints of anise and nutmeg. In the mouth, the wine offers soft, succulent flavors infused with blackberry fruit, mint, dark chocolate and coffee, while dusty tannins make a nice frame around the wine’s well-integrated fruit, herb and spice flavors – all of which lead to a graceful, pleasant aftertaste. The 2010 Formby & Adams Leading Horse Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine made for graceful ageing, and ageing well it has.

Rounding out this month’s Premier Series is the vibrant 2015 Sherwood Waipara Riesling. Entrancing scents of apple, peach and apricot waft from the glass and settle in the soul of this concentrated Riesling. Pure fruit and floral flavors emerge in the mouth to ingratiate the palate. Rich and concentrated, yet lively and long, the 2015 Sherwood Waipara Riesling makes a stunning case for Waipara as a source of world-class wine. Endowed with a delightful fruitiness and a winning outgoing personality, it’s easy to imagine consuming the better part of a bottle of Sherwood’s Waipara Riesling all by oneself.

The International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is proud to offer our members three additional world-class wines this month beginning with the 2012 Fore Family Vineyards Carneros Napa Pinot Noir. The 2012 vintage in Carneros yielded a bevy of exciting Pinot Noirs, but few can match the depth and beauty of the Fore Family’s 2012 Carneros Napa Pinot Noir – perhaps the very reason it garnered Gold at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Few California producers dare to fashion a Pinot as bold and beautiful as the Fore Family. The Fore Family’s 2012 Carneros Napa Pinot Noir is rich, concentrated and layered with the nuanced flavors of freshly picked blackberries, Morello cherries, cinnamon, rose petals and exotic spices.

Next up is Ayla’s Brut Majeur Champagne N.V. from one of the longest established houses in Champagne. Ayla’s Brut Majeur displays classic elegance from the moment it is poured, offering a color of pale gold, a fine mousse, and beautiful aromatics. Fashioned primarily from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from Grand and Premier vineyards, Ayla’s Brut Majeur offers a harmonious bouquet of apple blossoms, freshly baked bread and white flowers. In the mouth, this Brut Majeur offers laser-like precision, complex fruit and mineral flavors and a beautifully clean, vivacious finish. Balance and harmony are Ayla’s calling cards, and each reigns supreme in the Ayla Brut Majeur. It is no surprise that Ayla’s Brut Majeur has earned 90+ ratings from Decanter, Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, Vinous, and others.

Completing this month’s Collectors Series is the exceptional 2011 Trinchero Napa Valley Meritage. Suave, sophisticated, and utterly enjoyable now, the 2011 Trinchero Napa Valley Meritage is one of the vintage’s great successes. A delicious blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Malbec, Trinchero’s 2011 Meritage delivers both the sophistication of top-rated Classified Growth Bordeaux and the clean, plush fruit of the finest Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, the very reasons no doubt it has earned numerous 90 point ratings, including 90 points from Wine Enthusiast. This is a wine that far outstrips in quality and enjoyment the vast majority of big names in Napa Valley Cabernet. Enjoy!

Sauld!

Happy Anniversary to The International Wine of the Month Club’s Bold Reds Wine Club: Come Celebrate With Us!

October 18, 2017 by Don Lahey

The International Wine of the Month Club’s Bold Reds Wine Club celebrates its first birthday this month. We launched this club in October 2016 and thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response, The Bold Reds Wine Club has become a resounding success and continues to grow. To all of our members who have enjoyed the special selections in the Bold Reds club, we say a heartfelt thank you! To all who enjoy bold red wines and have not yet sampled these richly flavored world-class red wines, we invite you to celebrate with us with an International Wine of the Month Club Bold Reds membership. Here is what the Bold Reds club is all about.

The Bold Reds Wine Club features medium to full-bodied red wines of deep color and robust flavors from around the globe. Although delicacy and charm are admirable attributes in wines, many red wine drinkers crave the rich, complex flavors that only bold red wines can offer – wines of pronounced varietal character, as alcohol alone does not make a bold red wine: rich fruit flavors, pronounced ripe tannins, well-integrated oak tones from the right amount of barrel ageing, and the deft hand of a skilled winemaker in the finest of vintages yields bold reds worthy to be sent to members of The International Wine of the Month Club’s Bold Reds club. Full-bodied California Cabernets brimming with varietal character, single vineyard red Zinfandels, sublime Priorats and splendid Ribera del Dueros from Spain, Châteauneuf-du-Papes and flavor-packed Grenache offerings from Languedoc and the Rhône Valley, as well as highly acclaimed Carmenères, Cabernets and Malbec blends from South America are just some of the superb bold red wines you can expect to receive each month from our Bold Reds club. And on occasion, members may even receive an award winning, full-bodied Pinot Noir from Napa Valley’s Carneros district.

Some of this year’s bold reds include the award winning 2013 Obsidian Ridge Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Priorats from Galena and Pasanau, two of the formidable Priorat appellation’s most renowned producers, the newly released 2014 Chapel Hill McLaren Vale Shiraz, and the extremely limited production and a once in a lifetime offering of the 2012 Intuicion Solo Una Vez, a bold, beautiful blend of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Our upcoming November and December Bold Reds club will feature equally exciting wines: the 2012 Fore Family Vineyards Carneros Napa Valley Pinot Noir, a Pinot Noir of extraordinary richness, complexity and structure worthy enough to be a Bold Red, and the outstanding soon to be released 2015 Domaine du Grand Tinel Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Come celebrate our first anniversary with us with a glass of bold red wine from The International Wine of the Month Club.

Salud!

Stellenbosch: South Africa’s Rising Star

September 29, 2017 by Don Lahey

Stellenbosch Wine Country

South Africa has had a thriving wine industry since the 17th century, but there has never been a better time to discover South African wines than now. Quality and innovation push the envelope and values abound. And nowhere in South Africa is this truer than in the much heralded winelands of Stellenbosch.

Located on the Western Cape less than an hour north of Cape Town, the picture-postcard town of Stellenbosch and the surrounding mountains form a dramatic backdrop for what has justly been heralded as the most beautiful wine country in the world. Although some may try to refute that claim and promote the various picturesque merits of other world-renowned wine regions, what is not in question is the integral role Stellenbosch has played for more than three centuries in the formation of South African wine. Yes, the South African wine industry is that old; it dates back to the second half of the 17th century. Not only is Stellenbosch South Africa’s oldest and most important wine producing region, it is the finest region for red and white wines on the African continent. It is South Africa’s Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Barbara counties, along with more than a few touches of France. It contains a myriad of microclimates, which allows for the cultivation of an enormous number of grape varieties. Consequently, Stellenbosch is responsible for high quality red and white wines from a host of varietals that include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier, and South Africa’s unique varietal, Pinotage, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. From wineries in Stellenbosch old and new flow an enormous variety of wines that are world class and wholly unique in character. So don’t wait to discover the unique, incredibly flavorful wines of Stellenbosch – South Africa’s rising wine star and the world’s most beautiful wine land.

What to Look For In September

September 8, 2017 by Don Lahey

In September, The International Wine of the Month Club’s Premier Series offers four exciting wines from four continents. The 2015 Xiloca Calatayud Garnacha from Bodega Sommos begins this worldwide whirlwind tour. The 2015 Xiloca Garnacha offers a deep draught of ripe black cherry in its aroma, along with subtle hints of plum, earth and minerals for complexity and lift. In the mouth, the 2015 Xiloca Garnacha caresses the palate with plush fruit flavors born of Xiloca’s heirloom 80 year old Garnacha vines. The wine’s pleasant minerality and ripe tannins offer fine counterpoint to its intense fruit, which makes for uncomplicated, unadulterated enjoyment. Although it weighs in at 14.5% alcohol, the Xiloca Garnacha maintains its freshness and never appears weighty. The 2015 Xiloca Garnacha offers a unique look at Garnacha (Grenache) – a medium-bodied wine with bold flavors and plenty of Old World charm.

Our next feature is the delicious 2016 Mayu Valle de Elqui Huanta Vineyard Pedro Ximénez. Grown in one of the highest vineyards on earth at an altitude of 6,320 feet, the 2016 Mayu Valle de Elqui Huanta Vineyard Pedro Ximénez offers an appealing array of floral and fruit aromas, flavors vibrant with fresh acidity and zesty minerality, and a long, appealing finish. In the mouth, lively citrus and orchard fruit flavors grace the palate and slake the thirst. Made from a unique Spanish grape variety, the 2016 Mayu Valle de Elqui Pedro Ximénez possesses not only crisp acidity but also laser-like precision to accompany its ripe, forward fruit. Light on its feet yet long on the finish, Mayu has fashioned a distinctive, character-filled wine in the 2016 Mayu Pedro Ximénez from one of the planet’s loftiest vineyards.

Next in line this month is the exceptional, bold-flavored 2014 Edgebaston Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, a classic Cabernet Sauvignon and a stunning value. Edgebaston, renowned for its luxurious, long-lived GS Cabernet Sauvignon, has turned out a remarkably similar wine in the estate’s 2014 Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, with one exception: this 2014 Stellenbosch offering is approachable now and downright supple in comparison. Deep in color and almost as forbidding in appearance as Edgebaston’s GS, the 2014 Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon emanates from three outstanding clones of Cabernet that yield intense flavors of immense purity. The wine’s savory scents and flavors reminiscent of ripe berries and blackcurrant mingle with mint, herbs, dark chocolate, coffee and a Bordeaux-like herbaceousness, which recall the exceptional Cabernet-based wines of France’s Médoc and winemaker David Finlayson’s successful stint at Château Margaux. Garnering copious accolades and 90 points from Vinous, it is hard to imagine anyone in Napa Valley fashioning a Cabernet this complex and distinctive for under $40.00.

Rounding out this month’s Premier Series is Signal Ridge’s Non-Vintage California Brut Sparkling Wine Méthode Traditionnelle, a very tasty, traditional-method sparkling wine that provides outstanding quality, flavor, and value. Soft, succulent, yet fresh and vivacious, this Méthode Traditionnelle Brut from Signal Ridge offers a very satisfying glass of bubbly. For starters, it exhibits a light, pretty bouquet replete with the scents of crisp mountain apples and freshly baked bread. Soft and expansive in the mouth, it glides easily across the tongue before exiting with ease and grace. Unlike most less expensive sparkling wines not made by the Méthode Traditionnelle, Signal Ridge’s Brut finishes with the same charm it started with. It exhibits neither flab nor a harsh after-burn to mar its performance. No need to wait for “an occasion” to open this wine; Signal Ridge’s Brut Méthode Traditonnelle provides its own occasion.

The International Wine of the Month Club’s Collectors Series is proud to offer three exceptional wines from two of the most renowned wineries south of the equator. This month an International Wine of the Month exclusive, the 2014 Mr. Riggs Generation Series Montepulciano d’Adelaide from South Australia, leads the way. This rare beauty opens with an eye-popping violet hue and an intense aroma of red fruits, eucalyptus and mint. Smooth, rich and utterly entrancing in the mouth, Mr. Riggs’ Montepulciano d’Adelaide Hills lacks for nothing but a clean glass. Velvety and lithe in the mouth, one wonders how Ben Riggs can pack so much flavor into such a smooth format. The wine’s ripe tannins carry an abundance of berry fruit, mint, milk chocolate and subtle vanilla bean flavors as they glide across the tongue and fill the mouth. Ben Riggs captures the warm, extroverted nature Australia’s top-rated wines and marries them to the suavity and sophistication one finds in the finest Tuscan reds. Although one of the smallest of productions from Ben Riggs, the 2014 Montepulciano d’Adelaide Hills has captured the attention of many of the world’s most influential critics and earned 90+ point scores, which include 94 points from The Wine Front, Australia’s most active review site for wine consumers. Enjoy!

Next up is the 2014 Casas del Bosque Casablanca Pequeñas Producciones Syrah, a wine that continues to dazzle critics and consumers alike. Receiving numerous 90+ point ratings, including 96 points from Decanter and that magazine’s World Wine Awards Platinum Medal: Best Chilean Red Rhône Varietals as well as 93 points from Vinous and James Suckling, it is obvious that California, South Australia and France’s Rhône Valley hold no monopoly on premium Syrah. The 2014 Casas del Bosque Pequeñas Producciones Syrah offers a rich aroma of crushed blackberry, bramble, and violet. In the mouth, ripe blackberry and dark cherry flavors mingle with enticing notes of cinnamon, cedar, bacon, black olive and white pepper. Well-integrated oak tones backed by abundant, round tannins add backbone and superb length and structure to this outstanding Syrah. Although still in the bloom of youth, this purple potion offers incredible drinking pleasure from the moment it is poured.

Completing this month’s Collectors Series is the impeccably made 2015 Casas del Bosque Pequeñas Producciones Sauvignon Blanc, another wine that continues to dazzle both critics and consumers. Receiving many 90+ point scores, including 92 points from both Vinous and James Suckling, as well as lofty praise from Decanter and others, this world-class Sauvignon Blanc provides more than a match for France’s top Sancerres – the traditional benchmark for 100% Sauvignon Blanc wines from around the world. From the moment it is poured, this tiny production 2015 Sauvignon Blanc from Casas del Bosque offers broad, delicious, seamless draughts wrought with flavor and finesse. Endowed with supreme aromatics, balance, depth of flavor, texture and vivacity, this Sauvignon Blanc offers it all: a mélange of mineral-tinged herbal fruit, white peach, melon, Meyer lemon and tangerine. As a finale, it offers an explosive finish, packed with flavor and verve, without the acerbic finish that mars lesser Sauvignon Blancs, even many Sancerres from top-rated producers. Enjoy!

Salud!
