Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2022 pours a deep ruby with garnet reflections. Aromatically, the wine opens with red cherry, black cherry, and wild berry notes, layered with subtle dried herbs and violet. As it evolves, hints of cedar, leather, and gentle baking spice emerge from measured oak aging. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with firm yet refined tannins. Bright red fruit flavors—cherry and plum—lead, supported by savory notes of tobacco leaf and earthy minerality. The acidity is lively, providing freshness and balance that carry through the structured mid-palate. Oak influence is present but restrained, adding polish without overshadowing fruit. The finish is long and composed, lingering with red fruit, spice, and Tuscan earth. Serve at 60–65°F and consider decanting for 30–45 minutes to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity to fully unfold.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is exceptionally food-friendly due to its vibrant acidity and structured tannins. Pair with classic Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar ragù, bistecca alla Fiorentina, or roasted pork with rosemary. The wine’s savory undertones complement tomato-based sauces and herb-driven preparations. It also pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, mushroom risotto, or aged Pecorino Toscano. The acidity cuts through rich meats, while tannins harmonize with protein and fat. For a casual setting, try it alongside wood-fired pizza topped with sausage or prosciutto. Serve slightly below room temperature to highlight freshness and preserve balance.

Montepulciano, located in southeastern Tuscany between the Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana, is one of Italy’s historic centers for Sangiovese-based wines. The region earned DOCG status for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in 1980, though records of its wine production date back to the Middle Ages. The name “Nobile” reflects the wine’s historical association with Tuscan nobility and aristocratic families who prized its refinement and aging ability.

Vineyards sit at elevations ranging from roughly 250 to 600 meters above sea level. The area’s rolling hills benefit from warm days and cooling nighttime breezes that preserve acidity and aromatic clarity. Soils are predominantly clay, limestone, and sand-based compositions, contributing structure and mineral depth to the wines. Compared to Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile often shows a slightly softer tannic frame while maintaining Sangiovese’s signature elegance.

Poliziano was founded in 1961 by Dino Carletti and is now led by his son Federico Carletti. The estate has become one of Montepulciano’s benchmark producers, focusing on meticulous vineyard management and modern cellar precision. The 2022 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is composed primarily of Prugnolo Gentile—the local name for Sangiovese—typically blended with small percentages of traditional supporting varieties such as Colorino and Canaiolo, in accordance with DOCG regulations. Poliziano’s philosophy emphasizes varietal purity, balanced oak aging, and terroir expression, resulting in wines that are structured yet approachable.
