Müller-Thurgau is a white grape variety created in 1882 by Swiss botanist Hermann Müller from the Swiss canton of Thurgau. Originally believed to be a crossing of Riesling and Silvaner (now confirmed as Riesling × Madeleine Royale), the grape gained popularity across Germany, Austria, and Northern Italy for its early ripening and aromatic freshness. In the United States, Müller-Thurgau remains a niche but respected variety, particularly in cooler regions where its delicate aromatics and moderate acidity can be preserved.

Washington State provides an intriguing setting for aromatic whites. Although much of Washington is known for structured red wines, the Columbia Valley and its subregions offer high desert conditions with intense sunlight and significant diurnal temperature shifts. Warm days allow fruit to ripen fully, while cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic precision. This natural temperature swing is one of Washington’s defining viticultural advantages, producing wines with clarity and balance.

Öömrang Müller-Thurgau 2019 reflects this cooler-climate philosophy. Washington growers increasingly experiment with lesser-known European varieties, and Müller-Thurgau thrives in sites that avoid excessive heat. Clean winemaking practices—typically stainless steel fermentation and minimal oak—highlight the grape’s floral aromatics and crisp fruit character. The result is a wine that emphasizes freshness, approachability, and varietal expression, offering an alternative to more commonly planted Sauvignon Blanc or Riesling while maintaining comparable versatility.
