Fresh black cherry introduces the 2021 Mont’Albano Merlot, followed by gentle herbal aromas and a touch of spice. Plum becomes more prominent on the palate, where a plush, easygoing texture gives the fruit an inviting roundness. Clove and a subtle graphite-like note bring a savory dimension to the finish. The wine’s appeal lies in the contrast between its supple fruit and those more restrained herbal and spicy details. Balanced acidity helps maintain freshness, while the combination of cherry, plum, and savory accents creates an expressive red that remains approachable rather than overwhelming.
We’d pair this Merlot with mushroom gnocchi, tagliatelle with a savory meat sauce, grilled pork, or braised beef. Its fruit and herbal character should also complement pizza, roasted vegetables, or a board of salami and fresh cheeses. For a simple dinner, try it with pasta tossed with mushrooms, herbs, and Parmesan. Suggested serving temperature: 60–65°F.
Mont’Albano’s story began in 1985, when founder Mauro Braidot made organic wine production central to his work in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Set among the hillside vineyards of northeastern Italy, the winery developed around the belief that respect for biodiversity and responsible agriculture could help express the region’s distinctive character. The Sartori family acquired Mont’Albano in 2008, continuing an approach that connects the winery’s identity with organic farming and its Friulian roots.
This Merlot comes from Friuli’s mid-hill growing area and is made entirely from Merlot grapes. The producer’s technical sheet for the 2021 vintage describes gentle pressing and destemming, followed by fermentation with techniques that manage contact between the juice and grape skins. The resulting style emphasizes fruit, herbal nuances, and a balance between freshness and softness. Rather than presenting Merlot solely through richness and power, this bottling offers an approachable expression with a distinctly food-friendly personality.
