Viña Los Vascos is a distinguished Chilean winery located in the Colchagua Valley, approximately 200 kilometers south of Santiago. The estate's name, "Los Vascos," meaning "The Basques," honors the Basque families—Echenique and Eyzaguirre—who first planted vines in the region around 1750.
In 1988, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), renowned for Château Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux, acquired Viña Los Vascos. This marked one of the first significant French investments in Chilean viticulture. The Rothschilds implemented a comprehensive modernization program, combining Bordeaux winemaking expertise with Chile's unique terroir.
The estate spans over 8,800 acres, with approximately 1,700 acres under vine, making it one of the largest vineyards in the central Colchagua Valley. The region's Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm days and cool nights, along with well-draining soils, provides ideal conditions for grape cultivation.
Los Vascos is committed to sustainable and organic farming practices. Half of the vineyards are certified organic, with plans for full certification by 2030. The estate also emphasizes biodiversity, maintaining a diverse ecosystem that includes livestock, native flora, and pollinators. Innovations such as a solar-powered winery and an earthworm-based wastewater treatment system reflect their dedication to environmental stewardship.
The winery produces a range of wines, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Their flagship wine, "Le Dix," introduced in 1996 to commemorate ten years of Rothschild ownership, is crafted from the estate's oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and aged in French oak barrels from Lafite's cooperage.
Viña Los Vascos exemplifies the successful integration of Old World winemaking traditions with New World innovation, producing wines that reflect the unique character of Chile's Colchagua Valley.
