Deep ruby in color, Painted Scars opens with expressive aromas of ripe blackberry, black plum, damson, espresso, and dark chocolate layered with hints of wet stone and earthy minerality. Full-bodied and richly textured, the palate delivers concentrated dark fruit balanced by gentle tannins and remarkable energy. Notes of cacao powder, black fig, and subtle spice unfold across a long, polished finish. Aged for fifteen months in French oak, the wine combines opulence with freshness, creating a bold yet refined Rhône-inspired blend with excellent depth and structure.
This powerful Grenache-Syrah blend pairs beautifully with hearty dishes and slow-cooked meats. Serve alongside grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, rosemary lamb chops, or smoked brisket to complement the wine’s dark fruit and earthy spice. Rich mushroom risotto and aged cheeses also work exceptionally well. For an elevated pairing, enjoy with duck confit or chargrilled vegetables finished with herbs and olive oil.
Department 66 was founded by acclaimed winemaker Dave Phinney, best known for creating The Prisoner and Orin Swift Cellars. After discovering the rugged beauty of Maury in southern France’s Roussillon region, Phinney became captivated by the area’s ancient vineyards and dramatic landscape. Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees near the Spanish border, Maury is known for its steep terrain, black schist soils, and old-vine Grenache capable of producing deeply concentrated wines. Over the years, Phinney acquired more than 300 acres of vineyards and established a winery devoted entirely to showcasing the character of this unique region.
Painted Scars is crafted primarily from Grenache and Syrah grown among ancient Cathar castles and rugged mountain slopes. The wine reflects both the power and elegance of Maury, combining dense fruit with mineral-driven structure. Even the label carries artistic significance, featuring the work of renowned Mexican tattoo artist Dr. Lakra, whose bold imagery mirrors the wine’s intense personality and creative spirit.
