The 2022 Cooper’s Reed is a fresh, expressive Cabernet with impressive depth. Aromas of blackberry and dark plum are joined by savory hints of bay leaf and black olive. The palate brings black plum together with blood-orange peel, allspice and bittersweet chocolate, while touches of cinnamon and tomato leaf contribute complexity. The wine possesses enough breadth and structure to satisfy Cabernet drinkers without becoming excessively heavy. Soft, gently sweet tannins shape the finish, allowing the dark fruit and spice to linger gracefully.
This Cabernet blend is made for robust, savory fare. Pair it with grilled ribeye, herb-crusted roast beef, braised short ribs or lamb chops. Its dark fruit and savory herbal character also suit burgers, beef stew and portobello mushrooms. Aged cheddar, Gouda or Manchego make excellent cheese-board companions, while bittersweet chocolate notes in the wine can complement dishes finished with rich, deeply browned sauces.
Brendel takes its name from Leon Brendel, an Alsatian-born winemaker who eventually made his way to Napa Valley after working in Mexico. Brendel became the founding winemaker at Freemark Abbey and later planted his own vineyard near St. Helena, concentrating on the relatively obscure Italian variety Grignolino. In 1961, he sold his eight-acre property to Joe and Alice Heitz, who established Heitz Cellar there. The modern Brendel label was created as a tribute to his independent spirit and Napa Valley legacy.
The 2022 Cooper’s Reed carries the broader North Coast appellation rather than Napa Valley. This expansive California wine region encompasses several celebrated winegrowing counties and provides winemakers access to a wide range of climates and vineyard sites. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the foundation of Cooper’s Reed, complemented by Petite Sirah and Merlot, creating a fresh interpretation of California Cabernet with additional depth and texture.
