The 2022 Vinha Grande offers a concentrated core of dark fruit, accompanied by berry, herbal, and spice notes. Blackberry and black pepper provide particular definition, while a subtle chocolate character adds depth through the finish. On the palate, the wine combines ripe fruit with refreshing acidity and tannins that provide structure without sacrificing its approachable texture. Published assessments emphasize its velvety character and well-integrated oak, with enough freshness to keep the richer flavors balanced. The result is a satisfying Douro red that combines fruit concentration, savory detail, and a smooth, sustained finish.
The producer recommends Vinha Grande with meat, cheese, and pasta dishes, while also noting its suitability for white meats and oven-cooked fish. We’d consider roast pork, braised beef, mushroom pasta, or a selection of aged cheeses especially promising companions. For a Portuguese-inspired meal, try it with garlic-and-herb-roasted lamb or pork served with roasted potatoes. Suggested serving temperature: 60–65°F.
Casa Ferreirinha takes its name from the affectionate nickname of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the nineteenth-century businesswoman who became a defining figure in the Ferreira wine business. The house’s modern reputation for unfortified Douro wines is closely associated with Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, who produced the first vintage of Barca Velha in 1952. That wine helped establish a new benchmark for the region’s dry reds, demonstrating the Douro’s potential beyond its longstanding association with Port.
Vinha Grande continues that tradition through a blend of Portuguese grape varieties grown in the Douro. The region’s predominantly schist-based soils allow roots to penetrate deeply in search of water, an important advantage during its hot summers. The 2022 wine combines Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca and matured for approximately 12 months in used French oak barrels. This combination of regional varieties and measured oak aging preserves the wine’s fruit while contributing texture and complexity.
