Made from century old vines that grow high atop the Eastern Bench of Dry Creek Valley, Folie à Deux’s 2007 Forchini Vineyard Dry Creek Zinfandel more than holds its own against the very best Zinfandel that California has to offer – at any price. It delivers awesome power (15% alcohol) along with plenty of flavor and hedonistic pleasure, reminding us of the some of the great old vine Zinfandel bottlings of yesteryear. This is a deeply colored, robust wine that offers up scents redolent of blackberry, bramble, and finely ground spices. And once in the mouth, it takes complete charge of the senses with a captivating dance of flavors that caress and enliven the palate: black raspberry, blueberry and plum fruit flavors come to fore and mingle with hints of caramel and dark chocolate. Along with this juicy mélange of berry fruits and spice, the 2007 Folie à Deux Forchini Vineyard Zinfandel sports excellent structure and a long, gratifying finish, compliments of 16 months in Hungarian oak barrels. Enjoy this plush, textured Zinfandel at cool room temperature (no more than 66º F), after just a few minutes of aeration.
The 2007 Folie à Deux Forchini Vineyard Zinfandel begs to be shared. It needs little in the way of food accompaniments to shine, but how else can someone possibly share a fantasy (Folie à Deux) without a special someone with whom to enjoy the revelry? So, invite a friend over and rustle up some good down home stick to your ribs comfort food. Meat and potatoes with plenty of gravy, pasta and thick tomato sauce with meatballs and grilled Italian sausage, pesto and cheese tortellini, and roast pork with black olive tapenade constitute a few of our preferred pairings with the 2007 Folie à Deux Forchini Vineyard Zinfandel. But why stop there? One of our absolute favorite accompaniments to this wine remains chocolate, but not just any chocolate. With the full throttle Forchini Vineyard Zinfandel we suggest pairing a select piece of dark chocolate or a genuine hazelnut or dark chocolate truffle from a world class chocolatier such as Lake Champlain, Leonidas, or Nirvana. Folie à Deux, a boutique Napa Valley estate dedicated to crafting fine wine at affordable prices, continues to turn out outstanding Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel from some of Napa and Sonoma’s finest vineyards. This historic property lies just north of St. Helena in the heart of Napa Valley. Folie à Deux’s vineyards and century old farmhouse lay sandwiched between Spring Mountain and Howell Mountain, at the narrowest part of Napa Valley. The estate’s location provides a unique microclimate and a special terroir, which permit cool air to roll slowly down Mount St. Helena and cool the estate vineyard during the long summer days of torrid heat. Similar conditions prevail in Folie à Deux’s Dry Creek vineyards, where cool air sifts its way through the vineyard the way sand passes through an hourglass. The result is great physiological ripeness in the vineyard, without a loss of aromatic or flavor profile. Folie à Deux has blossomed since coming under the Trinchero family umbrella in 2004. Under Bob Trinchero, the proprietor of several renowned California wineries, the quality at Folie à Deux has skyrocketed. However, the tale of Folie à Deux is both intriguing and unique, as the winery’s name suggests. Folie à Deux was founded as a bonded winery in 1981 by two psychiatric professionals. When the couple told friends that they planned to fulfill a mutual dream by starting a winery, the friends jokingly suggested that the couple was exhibiting the classic symptoms of Folie à Deux, a psychiatric term that is defined as the sharing of fantasies by two close friends. The name stuck. To build on the theme, a local Napa Valley artist, Susan Ortega, created a drawing of twin dancers based on a Rorschach inkblot. Her inspiration for the label was the fantasy that she and her sister shared of one day becoming professional ballerinas.
