\"Fire<\/a>In most parts of the country, February is the snowiest and often coldest month of the year (or at least it appears that way to most of us who live outside the Sun Belt). \u00a0To ward of the chill of a cold winter\u2019s night, a hearty, mouth-filling red wine can work wonders.\u00a0 To make the best of the season and the weather outside, consider these Winter Warmers,<\/em> red wines that are sure to warm the blood as well as please the palate.<\/p>\n

Amarone \u2013 <\/b>A special, fleshy, utterly decadent red wine from Italy\u2019s Veneto, Amarone packs a punch (16%-plus alcohol) and delivers layers of luscious flavors sure to warm the bones and everything else, even without a roaring fire.\u00a0 Bertani<\/b>, Tommasi<\/b> and Tenuta<\/b> Sant Antonio <\/b>are all trusted names in Amarone and worth seeking out<\/p>\n

Barolo \u2013 <\/b>Barolo has been dubbed \u201cThe King of wines, and the wine of Kings,\u201d and rightly so. It is arguably Italy\u2019s greatest red wine and just the elixir one needs to make it through a cold winter\u2019s night.\u00a0 Luigi Pira, Paolo Conterno<\/b>, Querciola<\/b><\/a>, Revello<\/b><\/a>, Seghesio<\/b><\/a>, and Silvio Grasso<\/b><\/a> all make top notch Barolo.<\/p>\n

Gigondas \u2013 <\/b>As the Rh\u00f4ne Valley\u2019s heartiest red wine, stouter even than many Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas was once used as bonesetter<\/em>, AKA wine to beef up the finest red Burgundy wines in cool years because of its strength, vigor, and substantial alcoholic content.\u00a0 Domaine Raspail-Ay<\/b><\/a> and La Vau<\/b><\/a> are two excellent examples of powerful, palate-pleasing Gigondas.<\/p>\n

Ribera del Duero<\/b> \u2013 Spain\u2019s grandest, fullest-bodied Tempranillo based wines emanate from the hills along the Duero River.\u00a0 Pesquera<\/b><\/a>, Condado de Haza<\/b><\/a> and Dehesa la Granja<\/b><\/a> (from nearby Zamora), Emilio Moro<\/b><\/a>, and Montecastro<\/b><\/a> are just a few of the top producers who fashion hearty reds from Ribera del Duero, a wine that provides both comfort and warmth during the long winter months.<\/p>\n

Syrah\/Shiraz<\/b> \u2013 Not all Syrah- or Shiraz-based wines make great winter warmers, but the biggest and best surely do.\u00a0 Chapel Hill<\/b><\/a>, d\u2019Arenberg, <\/b>Henschke<\/b><\/a> and Torbreck<\/b><\/a> from South Australia; Bellingham\u2019s Bernard Series<\/b><\/a> from South Africa; and the best California Syrahs from Joseph Phelps<\/b>, Qup\u00e9<\/b> , Runquist<\/b> and others will more than fill the bill as winter warmers.<\/p>\n
