After nearly a century of slumber precipitated by the advent of\u00a0phylloxera, France\u2019s Languedoc has come roaring back.\u00a0 Once the source of much of France\u2019s finest red wines, the Languedoc fell from\u00a0oenological\u00a0grace in the late\u00a019th\u00a0century.\u00a0 The area\u2019s growers and cooperatives felt compelled to revitalize quickly after the scourge of\u00a0phylloxera\u00a0and began re-planting for yield and volume, rather than quality.\u00a0 Languedoc rapidly became the world\u2019s source of oceans of ordinary\u00a0plonk, a situation that lasted until the\u00a01980s.\u00a0 But what a difference a few decades make. Since the\u00a01980s\u00a0Languedoc has undergone a veritable renaissance in viticulture.\u00a0 Today, much of the sins of the last century have been rectified, and a coterie of young growers and winemakers continue to push the envelope on quality in the Languedoc.<\/p>\n

Premium varietals such as Syrah, Grenache, and\u00a0Mourv\u00e8dre\u00a0now complement or supplant the region\u2019s old vine\u00a0Carignan.\u00a0 Vineyards have been moved back up onto the hills, yields are being limited to insure quality and modern winemaking and\u00a0viticultural\u00a0practices now predominate.\u00a0 Moreover, organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices are flourishing in Languedoc. So great has been the transformation of France\u2019s oldest and largest wine producing region that the red wines of\u00a0Corbi\u00e8res,\u00a0Minervois, and\u00a0Pic\u00a0Saint\u00a0Loup\u00a0in Languedoc presently constitutes some of the planet\u2019s highest quality, most affordable wines.\u00a0 Be sure not to miss this trend or bypass Languedoc wines when searching for quality and value.<\/p>\n
