\"\"<\/a>Recently, someone asked me what the best white was under $20.00 per bottle.\u00a0 At first, I didn’t know quite how to respond to the question because truly, there are so many really good white wines for less than $20.00 a bottle.\u00a0 And at any given moment, my honest answer to that question depends upon the type and style of wine I\u2019m in the mood for, what season it is, and what I plan to serve with the wine.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, one wine almost immediately popped into my head \u2013\u00a0Martinsancho\u00a0Verdejo.\u00a0\u00a0Martinsancho\u00a0is the handiwork of Angel Rodriguez, Spain\u2019s most iconic producer of\u00a0Verdejo\u00a0and the driving force behind the resurrection of the\u00a0Verdejo\u00a0grape, one of Spain\u2019s two quintessential white grape varieties.\u00a0 Nearing extinction four decades ago,\u00a0Verdejo\u00a0came back to life because a venerable gentleman named Angel Rodriguez made a decision to preserve\u00a0Verdejo\u00a0by refusing to rip up the oldest producing wines in his native\u00a0Rueda.\u00a0 Instead, he grafted the gnarly three hundred year old vine cuttings from his\u00a0pre-phylloxera\u00a0Martinsancho\u00a0Vineyard into a nearby plot.\u00a0 The result is a magnificent dry white wine by Angel Rodriguez named\u00a0Martinsancho.\u00a0\u00a0Martinsancho\u00a0is hardly the biggest, most complex white wine in the world, but it may very well be the most eminently drinkable.<\/p>\n

In every vintage,\u00a0Martinsancho\u00a0Verdejo\u00a0exudes supreme grace and exhibits a purity almost never seen or tasted in other white wines.\u00a0 Made from organically grown grapes, with no added sulfites,\u00a0Martinsancho\u00a0Rueda\u00a0Verdejo\u00a0always pleases me.\u00a0 Moreover, it stands as testimony to the quality of the\u00a0Verdejo\u00a0varietal and the faith and perseverance of one honorable man \u2013 Angel Rodriguez.<\/p>\n
